Introduction
This evening, I am posting information on Roslin Castle (a ruin). This is situated close to the village of Roslin about seven miles south of Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital.

Information on Roslin Castle
Like it’s famous close neighbour, the Rosslyn Chapel, the castle was owned and controlled by the aristocratic Sinclair family. Sinclair is a corruption of St Clair (in northern France) from where the family emanated.The castle was founded in 1304 and progressively evolved over time as a function of improvements and embellishments.
The English attacked the castle in 1544. Final denouement occurred in 1651 when Cromwell’s forces (English) under General Monk attacked with cannon. This was in context of the English Civil War. Out of the remaining shell, the Sinclairs constructed a mansion but even this was attacked by an (anti-Catholic) Edinburgh mob in 1688. At this time religious passions in Scotland were very pronounced. The Sinclairs were devout catholics and reluctant to foreswear their faith at a time when Scotland had adopted Protestantism.

The castle is hidden down in Roslin Glen, about 5-10 mins walk from Rosslyn Chapel. Here flows the River North Esk. Most visitors to Rosslyn Chapel avoid the castle. However, if time permits a walk down to the castle and the pleasant glen (valley) can prove rewarding on a nice day. The site provides good photo opportunities in the right light conditions.

Roslin Glen is a charming nook. Over the years it has attracted the attention of artists ( JMW Turner) and authors such as the Wordsworth siblings.
Here is Midlothian’s largest surviving stretch of ancient woodland. Here can be seen such trees as ash, hazel, oak, sycamore, wych elm and yew.Through this landscape flows the River North Esk.
