Introduction
This evening, I am presenting information on important prehistoric rock carvings at Ballochmyle. Actual location is near Mauchline, about 30 miles south of Glasgow.
Information on the Ballochmyle rock carvings
Firstly, the site is not signposted and requires determination to reach it. Park at N55° 30.053’ W4° 21.436’ and go through the field gate. Next, head straight across the field to the piece of fence/stile on the other side sprayed yellow. Climb over it and cross the small muddy burn (stream) and the walls are directly across, up a slight rise.
The site comprises two adjacent rock outcrops each bearing a large number of carvings Unusually, vertical surfaces have been utilised for the carvings. Most are cup-and-ring but there are also linked cup-and-ring marks. there are others with radial grooves or multiple rings, and S, inverted U, and V shapes.
The carvings cannot be dated with accuracy but some experts suggest the Bronze Age (approx. 2000 BC to 700 BC). These designs are consistent with those found on the Isle of Arran and Achnabreck in Kilmartin Glen. The purpose of these abstract and non-figurative carvings is not known.
The following two video clips do provide a better appreciation for the site.

Visitors to the site benefit from the nearby stunning scenery of a local gorge. In the right weather and visibility this locale provides excellent photographic opportunities. The Image below gives a flavour for the site.
