Milngavie Town Centre

Introduction

Tonight, I am posting information on the outer Glasgow suburb of Milngavie (pronounced ‘Mill-guy’). This is a town in East Dunbartonshire and located close to the Allander Water (river). Distance from central Glasgow is about seven miles.

Information on Milngavie

The name translates from Gaelic as ‘windmill’ or ‘Dave’s Mill.

Population is about 13,500.

The town is a popular, upscale residential community with a direct rail link to Glasgow. Thus, it is popular with commuters.

Here can be found over 150 quality shops, boutique fashion outlets, restaurants, pubs and essential high street businesses.

Former Mill

Milngavie is perhaps best known as the start (or finish) of the world famous West Highland Way. This is a long-distance (100 miles) hiking trail the other terminus to which is Fort William in the Highlands. The town acts as a hub for many excellent walking and cycling routes that start and end in the town. Close top the centre of Milngavie can be found an interesting shopping experience known as Gavin’s Mill,

Today, the former mill complex is community owned and mainly comprises a retail section and cafe. The former sells products under the ‘Fairtrade’ banner coupled with locally sourced products both with emphasis on ethics and sustainability.

Milngavie benefits from a large, purpose built art gallery, known as the Lillie Gallery. An exhibition at this gallery was subject of my post on February 11th.
