Introduction

This evening, I am focusing on Bridge of Orchy, (pop 152) a small village in the Highlands of Scotland. This village straddles the main A82 highway into the highlands from Tyndrum to Glencoe and the north of Scotland. Location is 67 miles north of Glasgow.

Information

The origins of the village date back to around 1751. At this time the British military under Major Caulfield built a bridge (above) over the River Orchy. This construction was in context of  a major road building programme in the Highlands for the purpose of facilitating troop movements. The old Military Road still exists and crosses the A82 at Bridge of Orchy. This old road now forms part of the West Highland Way hiking trail and as such brings a steady stream of hikers to the village, and it’s hotel.

In addition to the highway there is also a rail connection.

The village stands in the shadow of Beinn Dorain, a mountain which rises to a height of 3524 feet.
