Introduction to Muir of Ord

This evening, I am posting information on the Scottish Highland village of Muir of Ord which is situated about 13 miles west of Inverness. Location is close to the Cromarty Firth. Key facts and information:

  • The name Muir could mean either ‘moor’ or ‘sea’ whilst Ord means ‘hammer shaped hill’.
  • Population is about 3000.
  • Local resources include Golf Club, Railway Station and Whisky Distillery, Glen Ord.
  • The village has its own football (soccer) team.
  • There is a mix of shops and accommodation.
  • Good views can be obtained of Ben Wyvis, a mountain with height of 3432 feet (1046 m) which translates from the Gaelic as ‘Hill of Terror’.
