Introduction
This evening, I am posting information on Royal Lochnagar Whisky Distillery which is located in the Scottish Highlands. Location is close to Balmoral Castle and Crathie Kirk.
Summary facts and information
- Purveyor of Scotch Whisky to the British Royal Court since 1848, following a visit by Queen Victoria.
- Dates from 1845 under ownership of John Begg and is successor to others under Begg ownership dating back to 1823.
- Sold by the Begg family to a whisky conglomerate in 1916 and now part of international drinks group, Diageo’s portfolio.
- Most of output goes into a blend called Windsor which is targeted at the Korean market.
- Flagship single malt is a 12 year-old. Other expressions include Selected Reserve and Distiller’s Edition.
- Capacity is a modest 500,000 litres p.a.which is produced using a single traditional mash tun (stainless steel), three wooden washbacks and two stills.
- Maturation undertaken in European oak casks.
- Tours and tastings are available.
