The Elephant House was established in 1995 at 21 George IV Bridge. It subsequently achieved fame due to it’s literary connections, principally the Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling. The famous author produced some of her early writing in the back room (George IV Bridge) overlooking Edinburgh Castle. Other famous authors have frequented the cafe. These include Ian Rankin, author of the bestselling Rebus novels, and Alexander McCall-Smith, author of The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency.

The Victoria Street location is temporary, due to fire damage at former George IV Bridge home.
Other ‘Harry Potter’ connected visitor attractions include the Jacobite Express Steam Train (Scotland) and Alnwick Castle (England).
