Information on the Town

The town is a combined ferry port and fishing harbour situated on the northern shore of Loch Broom.

The name is of Scandinavian origin (Old Norse) and translates as ‘Olaf’s Farm’.

Population is about 1550 and location is some 57 miles N.W. of Inverness.

The town is linked by ferry with Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides (islands).

Facilities include hotels and various accommodations, post office, shops, pubs, banks and a museum with information on family history.
