This evening, I am posting information on Oban Distillery which sits at heart of town of same name on coast of West of Scotland.

Information on Oban

The name Oban comes from the Gaelic an t-Oban Latharnach  or ‘little bay of Lorn. Visitors benefit from a wide range of hotels, guest houses and B&B lodgings. There are extensive shopping facilities and restaurants including those with seafood offerings. Using Oban as a base, there are regular car ferry crossings to and from islands including Mull and the Outer Hebrides.

Ranks as one of Scotland’s oldest having been founded in 1793.

• Since 18th century, Oban has grown from a fishing village to a medium-sized town with result that the Distillery is ‘hemmed in’ by other buildings and has no room for physical expansion.
• Ranks as one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries having been founded in 1793.
• Owned by international drinks conglomerate, Diageo.
• Capacity is 925,000 litres p.a. and as such sits in the small/medium category of Scottish whisky distilleries.
• Equipment consists of a seven ton stainless steel mash tun, four washbacks and one pair of stills. An extras wash charge was added in 2023.
• The distillery has recently moved to 7-day production with all fermentations now 119 hours. This results in a ‘fruity’ newmake spirit.
• There is an excellent visitor centre and regular tours, although photography of the production process is not permitted.
• Output is, typically, lightly peated. Core range consists of Little Bay, a 14-year-old, a 14 year -old, an 18-year-old and a Distiller’s Edition.
