Introduction

This evening, I am reporting on a small group hike around the Helix and Kelpies sites in central Scotland.

The Kelpies, Helix Parkland

Information on the Helix and Kelpies themed Hike.

The route covered about 6 miles near Falkirk in the west of Scotland. Falkirk is 20.5 miles north-east of Glasgow.

• Start at Falkirk High Railway Station, and then east through Callendar Park. This has a long history dating back to the construction of the Antonine Wall in 142 AD during the Roman period. Callendar House spans the period 14th-19th centuries.
• North through the Helix, a land transformation project and on to the Kelpies.The latter is a 30 metre high of horses sculpted by Andy Scott.(Kelpie is a Scottish name for fabled water spirit which, according to folklore, assumes the shape of a horse. It was reported to haunt lakes and rivers and take delight in drowning travellers. Andy Scott’s sculpture stands 100 feet high and is modeled on the powerful Clydesdale breed of horse. The construction is made of laser-cut steel. The combination of steel and Clydesdale symbolises the heart of Scotland’s industrial history.)
• Coffee stop at the Kelpies Visitor’s Centre then explored the community woodland and marshland of Langlees. Aim to search for two more sculptures, the Human Sun-Clock and Love and Kisses.
• Back to Falkirk High by bus.
