Burns was born 1759 in a basic cottage at Alloway, S.W. Scotland. This home was constructed by Burns’ own father. Burns spent the first seven years of his life with siblings at the Alloway cottage gaining active exposure to the rural based lifestyle. In his early years Burns was fortunate to benefit from from education via a private tutor.
The early agricultural work took a toll on Burns’ health resulting in an early death at age 37 yrs. During his short life he fathered twelve children by four different mothers.
However, Burns left a lasting legacy on Scottish and English literature. This included over 200 poems, over 400 songs and over 800 letters.
