Introduction

This evening, I am reporting on Lake of Menteith in the Trossachs region of Scotland.

The nearest community (village) is Port of Menteith. Location is about thirty miles north of Glasgow and about five miles east of Aberfoyle.

This is a timeless spot often by-passed by the tour buses. On the banks of the lake is an excellent hotel. which offers good food. Use of the lake is restricted to fishermen and the small ferry boat providing transfers to Inchmahome. A good place to unwind.

Information on the Lake of Menteith

• A Site of Special Scientific Interest and thus protected from development.
• Well stocked with trout and popular with fishermen.
• Famous as the only ‘lake’ in Scotland with all other water bodies designated as lochs.
• Within the lake confines are three islands. The principal island is Inchmahome on which is a ruined 12th century priory which is also a visitor attraction. Mary, Queen of Scots was taken here for safety for a period of three weeks in late 1547 when age four years.

• The island is accessed by small boat operated by Historic Environment Scotland.
• The Lake and its environs, including the islands, is known for its flora and birdlife.
• During severe winters the lake can freeze over. Bonspiels or curling tournaments have been held on the ice.
