Introduction

This evening, I am reporting on the popular visitor destination of Portree on the Isle of Skye, off the West of Scotland.

The name translates from Gaelic as ‘harbour of the slope’.

Portree is the principal town on Skye which is a popular tourist destination. Summary facts and information concerning Portree:

  • Located 113 miles west of Inverness in the Scottish Highlands.
  • Population about 2,500 of which 38 pct. can speak Gaelic.
  • Well endowed with a wide range of accommodation, from bunkhouses through to luxury hotels.
  • Central location provides a good base for touring the island including the Trotternish region and Dunvegan Castle.

  • Restaurants include seafood. There is a good fish and chip restaurant on the harbour.

  • Can be reached from the mainland by either ferry (Mallaig- Armadale) or via Kyle of Lochalsh and the Skye Bridge.
