Introduction

This evening, I am posting information on the small town of Aberfeldy (pop 1900) in central Scotland.

This has the ‘feel’ of a small country town notwithstanding which large numbers of visitors are catered for.
Information on Aberfeldy-Section 1
Location: About ninety two miles north of Glasgow. Suggest approach from south via A826 and Glen Cochill.
Name: The ‘Aber’ element is of Brittonic (Welsh) origin and means ‘meeting of the waters’. ‘Feldy’ is derived from the Gaelic peallaidh, the name of a local water spirit. The name suggests an age for the settlement of around 1500 years.
Golf: There is a nine hole golf club close to the River Tay. .Check website for details.

Black Watch Memorial: Located on the south bank of the River Tay. This was erected in recognition of the founding of the famous military regiment in 1740.

General Wade’s Bridge: Built in 1733 to a design by William Adam. Crosses the River Tay close to the Black Watch Memorial. This is a 5 span bridge, hump backed with a broad central arch and raised parapet and 4 obelisks. Constructed as part of a military road network to police the Highlands.

Birks of Aberfeldy: A Scenic gorge alongside the Moness Burn (stream) which was made famous by Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns. Can be accessed via a local hiking trail.

Castle Menzies: This is the ancestral seat of the Clan Menzies. It is located near to small village of Weem which is nearby. The castle dates from the 16th century. Check website for visiting times and details.

Kenmore and Loch Tay: About eight miles to the SE . Both village and loch have much to offer the visitor.

Croft Moraig Stone Circle: A late Neolithic stone circle (about 5000 years old). This is located about four miles to the west of Aberfeldy on the road to Kenmore on left hand side of the road.Ranks as one of the most impressive prehistoric circles on mainland Scotland. Free access open all year.

Aberfeldy Distillery aka Dewars World of Whisky: Dates from 1896 when John and Tommy Dewar built the distillery. The distillery now forms part of the drinks portfolio of the Bacardi Corporation. Tours and tastings are available. Check website for details.

White Water Activities: Focused on the rapids at Grandtully (pronounced “Grantly”) about 6 miles N.E. of Aberfeldly. Various local companies provide experiences.

Aberfeldy is home to wide range of shops, accommodations and eateries.
