Introduction

This evening, I am posting information on and images of the Falls of Acharn near Kenmore in central Scotland.

Information on the Falls

The Falls of Acharn, a series of waterfalls with a total height of 24.5 metres (80 ft). They are set in a steep wooded gorge and are a popular tourist attraction on the nearby Acharn Burn. The steep Acharn Falls Walk is about 1 mile (1.5 kilometres) straight up and down from the village. This route provides scenic views of the falls above the village.and out to Loch Tay.The upper falls have a timber walkway constructed by the 202 Field Squadron RE (V) (British Army) in June 1989. There is also Hermits Cave, possibly constructed by the Victorians as a kind of folly. (A folly is an elaborate structure with no real purpose. Most date from the Victorian era.)

Accessing the Falls

The falls are best accessed as follows:

• From the nearby village of Kenmore at northern end of Loch Tay travel for two miles down the eastern side of Loch Tay.  This will lead to the small village of Acharn.

• On reaching Acharn go past former water mill on left, over bridge and park nearby.
• On foot, follow the side of the burn (stream) up a farm track for about 10 mins. This is relatively steep but does offer superb views of Ben Lawers (mountain) and Loch Tay.

• Near the top is a sign to a hermit’s cave. Follow the path to the left through to a viewing platform.

After viewing the Falls it is possible to continue up and follow a trail round to the left which will eventually return the visitor to Kenmore. There is also the possibility of a diversion to visit the Greenland Stone Circle at a higher altitude with impressive views of the landscape.
